I don’t think it’s a secret that the “farmhouse style” is taking over the world. It’s always somewhat been around on Pinterest, but I think we can all agree that Chip and Joanna Gaines really brought it to life and have made it a “thing”. I mean…. I feel like people have started using Joanna’s name as an adjective to describe this style. It’s simple, it’s clean, and it can go from small town country to completely modern and still be considered “farmhouse style”. It is so versatile that it has something for nearly anyone! If you would have said farmhouse to me a few years ago, I would have envisioned a house on a farm with animals out the wazoo. Today’s farmhouse has a little different twist and I’ve compiled a list of my top 20 style trends that I think are categorizing homes as farmhouse’s across the Nation.
1. More Shiplap Pleaseeeeeee
Picture the emoji with the heart eyes…. that’s my face when I see shiplap. I’d have it on every wall if I could, but that stuff isn’t cheap! You can add shiplap to your life by having it as an accent wall. It brings dimension to a room and also creates a warm and inviting feeling in my opinion.
2. Barn doors aren’t just for Barns
Who would have thought that sliding barn doors would become a thing? I love it! Yes you do need real doors for certain rooms, but they are a great option for laundry rooms and closets.
3. Door knobs anybody???
Sticking to the door theme, don’t forget the door hardware! Changing something as simply as your door knobs can make a huge difference changing a average/blah door to a cute farmhouse door.
4. Industrial stair railing
I really didn’t like this style at first because it was a little too modern for me, but when put with a more traditional looking stair… I absolutely love it.
5. A slab for counters
This is another thing that I would have never thought to do. Concrete counter tops! Seems crazy, but it works! I think you just have to be careful with this by bringing in warmer accents in your kitchen so it doesn’t come off too cold feeling.
6. Stay Neutral
You don’t see a lot of harsh or bright colors in the farmhouse world. Think bright, but in a way where it makes your home feel more open and full of light. The color white is a big deal along with grays, sage greens, and other neutral colors. Joanna Gaines even has her own paint line now! What doesn’t she do, really?
7. The Simple Life
The farm life is the simple life in today’s age. Less clutter, clean, and minimal decor is key.
8. Everything EVEN the kitchen sink
OMG… Farmhouse sinks….. That is all. Need I say more? The cool thing about these is they can be your traditional farmhouse sink, or if you are going for a more modern vibe, they make stainless steel farmhouse sinks.
9. Let’s talk tile
White subway tile with dark grout has been big. Being in Real Estate, I’ve been seeing this more and more in kitchens and even bathrooms. I personally don’t think this trend is going to live forever because there are more timeless options, but it is definitely in now.
Remember above when I said that there are more timeless options? BRICK is what I’m talking about! Having brick walls, backsplash, or even flooring is going to be something that will always be cool.
11. Clawfoot tubs
These things can’t be very comfortable, but I don’t care, I want one.
12. Timeless vanities
How cool is this? Turning old dressers into your bathroom vanities?!? Gahhhhhhh….
13. White kitchen cabinets
My husband works on vehicles and leaves grease smudges everywhere, but he’s going to have to learn how to wash his hands better because these are totally going in our home when we build this year.
14. It’s all about the beams
It’s crazy how something so barn-like and open can be so warm and inviting. Sometimes vaulted ceilings can make a room feel not so cozy, but beams can make all the difference!
15. Exposed ducts
This isn’t really my thing, but my husband loves it so I’ll be compromising on this when we build… I mean, he’s letting me have the uncomfortable clawfoot tub that he probably couldn’t even fit in. You have to give a little to take a little, right? It is kinda cool I suppose!
16. Let’s go dutch
I don’t know if dutch doors are a thing, but I’m making them one. I love these things!!!
17. Thick window trim
It’s interesting how thicker window trim and even thicker baseboards can give a farmhouse feel. I like it!
18. Come to the light
Natural light is such an important touch for the farmhouse feel in my opinion. What does that mean? WINDOWS!!!! And light colors 🙂
19. Black accents
I know I know I know….. I’m about to contradict myself because I’ve been talking about white, white, and more white. BUT… black accents add to this style too and almost create a french country feel.
20. Reclaimation Station
You probably saw this coming…. but last and certainly not least, reclaimed wood! Be careful with this…. you CAN have too much. It’s best to just have an accent wall. You can make this as country as your want or you can do cool stains to dress it up a little.
And there you have it, that’s my 20 top farmhouse trends! I’m sure you got the drift, but my husband and I will be building our very own farmhouse this year and I cannot wait to blog and share each step of the way. Hopefully I get to use all 20 of these things. It will be a modern day farmhouse, but I will probably also have animals out the wazoo 🙂
